Windstorms are one of the least talked about types of storms. Why? Because windstorms are usually part of thunderstorms, tornadoes and other storms and we just talk about the main storm. But windstorms, alone or part of another type of storm, can cause significant damage to your home. If you are prepared, then there will be less damage. How can you prepare?
Gravel: Look around your house. Do you have gravel walks and a gravel driveway? When a windstorm hits, that gravel might be tossed into the air and if it hits a window just right, then you’ll have to replace broken glass.
So, you have a few choices. You can keep the gravel and gamble that it won't hit the window just right. Or, you can replace the gravel with mulch and the gravel driveway with cement. A third choice is to add a binding agent that will keep the gravel from flying around, yet it will still look like gravel. There are many types of binding agents for this that you can get at your local hardware store.
Trees and shrubs: If you see a dead branch on a tree, have it taken down. Dead branches are likely to break off and be blown against your house in a windstorm. Also, make sure you don't have shrubs or trees that scrape against your house. In a windstorm, these won't just scrape your house, they can scratch the finish on your house.
Roofs: Make it a habit to inspect your roof a few times per year. One of the major insurance claims from windstorms is shingles coming off a roof and then water damage from rain. Taking time to inspect the roof will minimize the risk of damage to ceilings and furniture. Replacing a few shingles does not cost much, but replacing a ceiling with water damage can cost you a lot of money.
