How to Prepare for Flood Season

flooded houseFloods are one of the most common natural disasters in the country. They can happen anywhere for a variety of reasons. But many areas are particularly susceptible to flooding during the springtime rainy season. Want to protect your home from water damage? Here are a few tips to help.

Prepare in Advance

If your house is located in a low-lying area, it’s beneficial to elevate the water heater, furnace and electrical panel to prevent the risk of electrocution if it floods.

Does your home have a basement? Seal the walls with waterproofing material to prevent water damage.

Keep your gutters clean to prevent backlogging that can cause water to pool on or around your home during heavy rains.

When a Flood is Predicted

If a flood has been predicted, elevate the furniture and large appliances (like the washing machine and fridge) on cinder blocks above the projected flood level. Smaller valuables can be placed on high shelves or in cabinets.

Anchor down fuel tanks to prevent them from floating away or leaking and contaminating the waters around your home.

Make sure your car has a full tank of gas in case of evacuation.

Your Emergency Plan

Your family should know what to do and where to meet in case of disaster. Keep a document in a convenient location that contains important phone numbers, your insurance agent’s information and anything you may need if you’re forced to evacuate for a few days.

If you must evacuate, be sure to first turn off the water and electricity to the house.

If you wish to pre-pack a supply kit in case of emergency, good items to include are a first aid kit, bottled water, non-perishable food, a weather radio, flashlights with extra batteries, blankets, rain gear, necessary medications and any extra supplies needed for babies, pets or seniors.

Remember, standard homeowners insurance does not include flood coverage unless specifically added to your policy. Call your independent insurance agent for more information about flood insurance and how it can benefit your family.

Get the coverage you need. Call Reliable Insurance Managers at (713) 227-7283 for more information on Katy flood insurance.
