How to Avoid Rear End Collisions When Motorcycling

close up of motorcycleRear end accidents are a frequent occurrence and can happen at any time when you are on the road. This type of accident is often caused by motorists who are distracted or don't allow enough space in front of them to react to sudden slowdowns of the traffic ahead.

As a motorcyclist, you are less visible than a car and more vulnerable to injury. This is why avoiding rear endings is so important. While the consequences for the driver of a car often means whiplash, the consequences for you are far more severe. Avoid rear end collisions by remembering these tips.

Make Yourself Visible to Other Motorists

Avoid black colored bikes. This color tends to blend into the background. Owning a bike that is brightly colored will make you more noticeable. Since you are a big part of the motorcycle silhouette, you should also wear bright, reflective clothing. Light colors stand out more than dark. If your helmet and clothing aren't reflective, apply reflective tape.

Know How to Cope With Tailgaters

When a motorist tailgates, safely move into another lane. If the road isn't multi-laned, then increase the distance between yourself and the car in front. This extra distance means you won't have to brake hard should the car in front suddenly slow down. By not braking hard, the car behind you will have more time to react.

Position Yourself Toward One Side of a Lane At Traffic Lights

This will give you an escape route should a car behind you fail to brake. Maintain an awareness of what is happening behind you and keep your bike in gear. Size up the situation along your escape route so that you don't cause an accident should you have to use it.

Leave Plenty of Space Between Yourself and the Car in Front

This allows more reaction time to sudden traffic changes in front of you. This distance should be increased when the roads are wet or visibility conditions are poor. When stopped at an intersection, leave plenty of space in front so that you won't get sandwiched should you get rear ended.

Beware of Road Situations That Cause Distraction

Drivers often rubberneck to look at traffic accidents or at police cars that are flashing their lights. Road construction will also cause drivers to pay less attention. Drive extra defensively in these situations.

In addition to the above tips, maintain an observant eye, keep your bike in good condition and learn good riding skills. You will need all three to keep yourself safe from the hazards of the road.

Stay road safe. Call Reliable Insurance Managers at (713) 227-7283 for more information on Katy motorcycle insurance.
